For anyone who is having a hard time understanding MonaVie's compensation plan, I have a few videos to share. In addition to the videos you can click here to read the questions I had about the compensation plan as well as the answers that I was given through e-mailing MonaVie's distributor support.

The first two videos are from an independent distributor who breaks down on a dry erase board how the compensation plan works. These videos are apparently 2 out of a series of 3 videos but I have not been able to locate the third. However, the third video has to do with the areas of compensation that you only achieve at very high levels within the company. So if you are just starting out you don't need to worry about these yet. I found these videos to be way more helpful in my understanding of the compensation plan than MonaVie's corporate video, which is the third and final video that I have included.

I suggest watching this guy break down the compensation plan first and then watch MonaVie's corporate video so that you can better understand how it works. If you have any questions feel free to ask me in the form of a comment below this post and I will get the answers for you direct from MonaVie's distributor support.

MonaVie Pulse FAQ's

This information came direct from the MonaVie Virtual Office, a corporate run website only accessible to independent distributors. Click here to view this in pdf form.

Can I take Pulse with MonaVie Active and/or MonaVie Original? If I take both, how should I take them?

Yes, you can drink MonaVie Pulse with MonaVie Active or MonaVie Original. To get the full joint health benefits from MonaVie Active, you will need to drink 4 ounces of MonaVie Active as directed; to get the full benefits from the plant sterols, you will need to drink 4 ounces of MonaVie Pulse as directed.

What are plant sterols?

Many plants include some substances known as plant sterols, phytochemical compounds found in the fatty tissues of plants. Wheat germ, sesame oil, wheat bran, and Brussels sprouts are rich in plant sterols. When plant sterols are consumed, they compete with cholesterol for absorption in the body. However, it is difficult to consume enough of these foods on a daily basis to derive enough plant sterols to maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Can I take MonaVie Pulse with my cholesterol lowering medication?

MonaVie is unaware of interactions between the ingredients found in MonaVie Pulse and statin medications. However, prescription medications can often lead to adverse effects on the body regardless of your diet. Therefore, as with any prescription medication use or concern, it is wise to discuss your diet with your physician prior to use.
What is the shelf life of MonaVie Pulse juice and MonaVie Pulse gel?
If unopened, MonaVie Pulse juice and gel have a shelf life of one year. If MonaVie Pulse juice has been opened, then the shelf life is approximately 15 - 30 days, as long as the opened bottle is refrigerated. MonaVie Pulse Gel should be consumed in its entirety as soon as it is opened.
What are polyphenols?

Polyphenols are a class of powerful antioxidants that are thought to be responsible for the French Paradox: the French have a diet relatively high in fat, yet have a decreased incidence of heart disease; this is attributed to the amount of polyphenols present in the grapes used to make French wines. MonaVie products contain a powerful variety of polyphenols, including anthocyanins.

Are MonaVie products safe?

Yes. MonaVie contains fruit juices and purees naturally found in the food supply that have been consumed by various cultures for hundreds of years. However, if you have any health concerns, consult a physician before starting any new product or program.

What are the ingredients?

Exclusive blend of açai (freeze-dried powder, puree); reconstituted fruit juice blend (concord grape blend, pineapple, apple, prickly pear, pomegranate, elderberry, yumberry, bilberry, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, cranberry, rasberry, aronia), plant sterols (emulsified with corn syrup solids, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, gum acacia), Apple Phyto-Phenolics(r) (polyphenol blend), omega-3 (cranberry seed oil), resveratrol, natural flavors, potassium sorbate (preservative), sodium benzoate (preservative), citric acid.

What is MonaVie Pulse?

MonaVie Pulse is scientifically formulated with 19 fruits, including the superfruit açai, delivering powerful antioxidants to nutritionally support your cardiovascular system. With added benefits of plant sterols (which studies suggest play a key factor in lowering cholesterol), resveratrol, and omega-3 fatty acids, maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system and healthy cholesterol levels has never been easier.

How do plant sterols work?

From your body’s point of view, plant sterols look a lot like cholesterol. Studies suggest that as you eat a meal with sufficient amounts of plant sterols, the body absorbs less cholesterol because plant sterols actually compete with cholesterol for absorption in the body. Foods containing at least 0.4 g per serving of plant sterol esters, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 g, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Two servings of MonaVie Pulse juice (4 oz.) supply 0.8 g of plant sterols.

How long do I need to consume MonaVie Pulse before changes are seen?

Studies have been conducted on the plant sterols contained in MonaVie Pulse. In these studies, cholesterol-lowering benefits were detected after consuming 0.8 grams of plant sterols daily for 4 weeks or more. MonaVie is currently conducting a study to determine whether Pulse, which contains 0.8 grams of plant sterols in 4 oz. of juice, is able to produce the same benefits over the same amount of time.

Are plant sterols safe?

Numerous human and toxicological studies conducted with plant sterols have shown no adverse effects in most populations. However, if you have a specific concern, health condition, or question regarding the consumption of plant sterols, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to consuming MonaVie Pulse.

Is MonaVie Pulse safe for women who may be pregnant or lactating?

If you are pregnant or lactating and have a specific concern or question about consuming MonaVie Pulse, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to consuming the product.

MonaVie goes to great lengths to ensure its products are safe. This includes using ingredients with Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status as required by the FDA prior to sale. MonaVie also ensures that its products are manufactured according to Current Good Manufacturing Practices as required by the FDA.

In addition to these requirements, MonaVie employs rigorous testing to ensure its products meet its pre-determined high quality standards for safety and purity. However, despite our confidence in the safety of MonaVie Pulse, MonaVie does not replace the advice of a physician.

Can I take MonaVie Pulse with my cholesterol-lowering medication?

MonaVie is unaware of interactions between the ingredients found in MonaVie Pulse and statin medications. However, prescription medications can often lead to adverse effects on the body regardless of your diet. Therefore, as with any prescription medication use or concern, it is wise to discuss your diet with your physician prior to use.

Can I take Pulse with Active and/or Original? If I take both, how should I take them?

Yes, you can drink MonaVie Pulse with MonaVie Active or MonaVie Original. To get the full joint health benefits from MonaVie Active, you will need to drink 4 ounces of MonaVie Active as directed; to get the full benefits from the plant sterols, you will need to drink 4 ounces of MonaVie Pulse as directed.

Why should I be concerned about my cholesterol?

According to the American Heart Association, elevated blood cholesterol is a major risk factor in cardiovascular health. Nearly 100 million Americans have elevated cholesterol (>200 mg/dL) and, oftentimes, they don’t even know it. Taking action now to maintain healthy cholesterol levels will help prevent such problems from arising.

Cholesterol levels can often be modified by lifestyle changes, such as eating a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and high in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. MonaVie Pulse contains plant sterols, which studies suggest play a key role in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels already within the normal range. Consuming plant sterols as a regular part of a healthy diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol provides another natural option in the maintenance of cardiovascular health.

Do governments or professional health associations recommend consuming plant sterols?

In the US, the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) suggests the use of plant sterols in conjunction with other lifestyle changes produces positive effects on cholesterol levels achieved through dietary means. (The NCEP is a branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Have any clinical trials been done with plant sterols?

Plant sterols (phytosterols) have been clinically evaluated in many different populations, under different circumstances over the past 50 years. In a number of studies plant sterols have demonstrated the ability to improve cholesterol levels in humans. The health benefits of phytosterols have been well established, and public health authorities, such as the US National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), are beginning to include phytosterols as part of their dietary recommendations (NCEP, 2001).

Can children consume MonaVie Pulse?

MonaVie Pulse is targeted for adults watching their cholesterol and concerned with heart health. Although MonaVie has taken steps to ensure this product is safe for consumption as a food, children should not normally be concerned with heart health or maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. MonaVie Original is a great product for children to consume.

What if I am concerned about cholesterol, joint health and antioxidant nutrition, but I only want to use one product? Which product should I take?

All of the MonaVie products contain açai and a blend of 18 additional body-beneficial fruits. MonaVie Original is for individuals mainly interested in antioxidant nutrition and aging. Built on the foundation of MonaVie Original, MonaVie Active also provides the additional benefits of glucosamine for joint health. MonaVie Pulse offers a potent blend of antioxidant nutrients for cardiovascular health and enough plant sterols (.8 grams per 4 oz or 2 packets) to help maintain existing healthy cholesterol levels.

Why were plant sterols (phytosterols), omega-3 fatty acids, and resveratrol added? Aren’t these already found in açai?

Plant sterols, often called phytosterols, are naturally occurring fats found in plants. Açai, a source of healthy fats, does contain some phytosterols. They are found in MonaVie Active and Original, but by adding more plant sterols to MonaVie Pulse, the product is able to support a healthy heart and maintain existing healthy cholesterol levels.

What is a serving size of MonaVie Pulse juice and Gel?

Drink two ounces of MonaVie Pulse juice twice daily. One serving (two ounces) provides 0.4 grams of plant sterols. For Pulse Gel, take one packet twice daily. One packet (one serving) also provides 0.4 grams of plant sterols.

How is Pulse Gel different from the juice?

MonaVie Pulse juice and gel are scientifically formulated with 19 fruits, including the superfruit açai, delivering powerful antioxidants to nutritionally support your cardiovascular system. Both the juice and gel provide 0.4 grams of plant sterols per serving. A serving of Pulse juice is 2 ounces and a serving of Pulse Gel is 1 packet (1 ounce). You will receive the same benefits from products; however, the gel is more portable for convenience when on the go.

What new fruits have been added?

Concord grape, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, elderberry, yumberry, tart cherry, prickly pear, pineapple, and cupuaçu.

Why did MonaVie choose to add these fruits to the Pulse juice blend?

Concord grape, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, elderberry, yumberry, and tart cherry were identified for their antioxidant content, especially polyphenols. Diets rich in fruits that provide a variety of polyphenol antioxidants have been shown to benefit overall health as well as the maintenance of cardiovascular health. Cupuaçu and yumberry help keep MonaVie on the cutting-edge of nutritional trends. Native to the Amazon Rainforest, cupuaçu has been praised as one of the next great superfruits for its nutritional properties. Pineapple and prickly pear have been added to enhance MonaVie Pulse’s flavor and nutritional profile.

How does the amount of açai found in Pulse compare to Original and Active? Does it contain more or less açai?

Açai remains as the crown jewel and is the primary ingredient in MonaVie Pulse. The amount of açai in MonaVie Pulse is equivalent to MonaVie Active and Original.

MonaVie Pulse
Product Information Page

Watching your cholesterol? MonaVie Pulse was created with your heart in mind. Formulated with 19 fruits, including the superfruit açai, this delicious, heart healthy blend delivers powerful antioxidants to nutritionally support your cardiovascular system. Additionally, MonaVie Pulse Gel allows you to enjoy all the benefits of MonaVie Pulse juice in a convenient gel pack. Whichever MonaVie product you treat your taste buds to, you’ll feel great knowing that you are taking charge of your health.

Benefits:
  • Boasts heart healthy levels of plant sterols* to help maintain existing healthy cholesterol levels.
  • Features resveratrol, which supports your cardiovascular system by helping protect healthy blood vessels.
  • Delivers powerful antioxidant polyphenols to promote a healthy cardiovascular system.
  • Features a wide array of essential nutrients for optimal health.
  • Offers potent antioxidant protection against free radicals.

Key Ingredient:

The açai berry is the crown jewel of the MonaVie blend. When properly freeze-dried, açai boasts an ORAC score higher than that of any other fruit or vegetable tested to date, based on available USDA data. It’s no wonder that for ages the indigenous cultures of the Amazon have revered açai as a source of health and vitality. Recently, modern science has validated the remarkable health benefits of this fruit, and studies have shown açai to contain the following beneficial nutrients:

  • Antioxidants
  • Phytonutrients
  • Essential fatty acids (Omega 3)
  • Amino acids
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Complex carbohydrates
  • Dietary fiber
  • Trace minerals

Studies have also shown that freeze-dried açai powder boasts antioxidant capacity more than 15 times higher than blueberries and more than 20 times higher than raspberries. The final MonaVie blend incorporates the flavors and benefits of the açai berry and other healthful and delicious fruits.

What Makes MonaVie Unique?

  • The Key ingredient: MonaVie Pulse’s açai leverages an exclusive method of preserving the benefits of the açai berry into a freeze-dried powder. Rich in polyphenols (a powerful form of antioxidants), açai is able to neutralize free radicals, thereby lowering oxidative stress. What’s important to note is that the açai berry’s nutritional properties are volatile and can easily be compromised if not properly harvested and processed. The process used to make MonaVie’s açai freeze-dried powder is the most effective method of ensuring the nutrient content and antioxidant activity of the açai berry.
  • The Blend: The açai berry is arguably the most important fruit in existence for your health. Experts have referred to açai as the world’s No. 1 superfood. But nature has given us literally thousands of different phytonutrients and antioxidants that are important for our bodies to function optimally. While it may be difficult to get too much of a good thing, it would be unwise to ignore the variety of health benefits that nature’s other fruits have to offer. That is why MonaVie Pulse features a heart healthy blend of fruits specifically chosen for their ability to nutritionally support cardiovascular health—açai, concord grape, pineapple, apple, prickly pear, pomegranate, elderberry, yumberry, bilberry, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, cranberry, raspberry, aronia, acerola, strawberry, cupuaçu, and camu camu.
  • The Process: MonaVie takes great care at each step in production to ensure the highest quality standards are met.
(Harvesting) The process begins with the harvesting of the açai berry deep within the Amazon River basin. Unlike poachers, who illegally chop down an entire tree just to harvest a 12-inch section of the tree known as the palmito (or “heart of the palm”), our conservative harvesting method removes only the açai berries, thereby preserving the life of the tree and promoting the preservation of the rain forest.
(Processing) Açai is a powerful yet delicate fruit and much of its vitamin and nutrient content can be lost within 24 hours after harvesting, if not properly cared for. To preserve its full complement of nutrients, our açai is frozen soon after harvesting. This frozen açai is then processed into our exclusive, freeze-dried formula, the most effective and nutrient-dense form of açai available.
(Formulation and bottling) Most companies use a process known as kettle pasteurization. This process involves heating the formula for several hours and can inadvertently “cook out” many of the nutritional properties. However, MonaVie uses flash pasteurization in which the formula is rapidly heated, bottled, and cooled, thereby capturing the fresh flavors, vibrant colors, and dense nutrient content of the blend.
  • The Science: Each step of this advanced and unique process takes place under the watchful eyes of our industry leading product development team and scientific advisers.

Who should use this Product?

  • MonaVie Pulse — Health conscious men and women who are concerned with cholesterol levels, heart health, and overall nutrition and well being.
  • MonaVie Pulse Gel — Health conscious men and women who are on-the-go and want all the benefits of MonaVie Pulse juice in a convenient gel pack.

MonaVie Active FAQ's

This information came direct from the MonaVie Virtual Office, a corporate run website only accessible to independent distributors.

What is açai?

Açai is a small, round, dark-purple berry with amazing nutritional properties. Its appearance is similar to that of a grape, but it has a smaller amount of pulp and a single large seed. Scientific experts have referred to the açai berry as the most nutritious and powerful food in the world.

Does açai have a high ORAC score?

Yes, MonaVie’s freeze-dried powder boasts the highest ORAC score of any fruit or vegetable tested to date, on a gram-for-gram basis. The açai berry is the star among other well-known antioxidant fruits, such as blueberries, grapes, cranberries, and pomegranates. Obtaining a variety of antioxidants through diet or supplementation is essential to maintaining good health.

What Does ORAC mean?

ORAC (oxygen radical absorption capacity) is a way to measure the antioxidant capacity of a food. Foods with high ORAC values are desirable for their ability to inhibit free radical activity.

What are phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients are powerful antioxidants and naturally occurring compounds that contribute to the flavor, color, and disease-resistance of plants (i.e., fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes). Maximum health benefits are derived from consuming a variety of phytonutrients with a full spectrum of colors and pigments, such as those found in MonaVie Active products.

MonaVie Active products contain a powerful variety of polyphenols, including anthocyanins.

What Is Glucosamine Hydrochloride?

Glucosamine hydrochloride is a natural compound found in the body that is used to help make and form cartilage. Glucosamine has also been shown to help lubricate, cushion, protect, and rebuild joints.

Are MonaVie Active products safe?

Yes. MonaVie Active contains fruit juices and purees naturally found in the food supply that have been consumed by various cultures for hundreds of years. However, if you have any health concerns, consult a physician before starting any new product or program. [From what I understand, only MonaVie Original should be consumed by children, pregnant women or breast feeding women].

What is the shelf life of MonaVie Active juice and MonaVie Active gel?

If unopened, MonaVie Active and MonaVie Active Gel have a shelf life of one year. If MonaVie Active juice has been opened, then the shelf life is approximately 30–60 days, as long as the opened bottle is refrigerated. MonaVie Active Gel should be consumed in its entirety as soon as it is opened.

What are the ingredients?

Proprietary blend of açai (freeze-dried powder and puree); reconstituted fruit juice blend (white grape, apple, acerola, aronia, purple grape, cranberry, passion fruit, prune, kiwi, blueberry, bilberry, wolfberry, pomegranate, lychee, camu camu); fruit purees (pear, banana, cupuacu); d-glucosamine hydrochloride, citric acid, natural flavor, sodium benzoate (preservative), potassium sorbate (preservative).

"MonaVie Active and MonaVie Active Gel
Product Information Page

MonaVie Active is a delicious blend of the Brazilian açai berry—one of nature’s top superfoods—and 18 other body-beneficial fruits, assembled in advanced formula that contains glucosamine to promote healthy joint function. Additionally, MonaVie Active Gel allows you to enjoy all the benefits of MonaVie Active juice in a convenient gel pack. Whichever MonaVie Active product you treat your taste buds to, you’ll feel great knowing that you are taking charge of your health.

Benefits:
  • Offers a blend of 19 fruits, including the superfood açai.
  • Provides antioxidants and phytonutrients to help maintain and promote good health.
  • Delivers the equivalent antioxidant capacity of approximately 13 servings of fruits and vegetables (in 4 oz. of MonaVie).

Key Ingredient:

The açai berry is the crown jewel of the MonaVie Active blend.

Studies have also shown that freeze-dried açai powder boasts antioxidant capacity more than 15 times higher than blueberries and more than 20 times higher than raspberries. The final MonaVie Active blend incorporates the flavors and benefits of the açai berry and other healthful and delicious fruits.

What Makes MonaVie Unique?

  • The Key ingredient. MonaVie Active's açai leverages an exclusive method of preserving the benefits of the açai berry into a freeze-dried powder. Rich in polyphenols (a powerful form of antioxidants), açai is able to neutralize free radicals, thereby lowering oxidative stress. What’s important to note is that the açai berry’s nutritional properties are volatile and can easily be compromised if not properly harvested and processed. The process used to make MonaVie’s açai freeze- dried powder is the most effective method of ensuring the nutrient content and antioxidant activity of the açai berry.
This is why MonaVie Active products include a blend of beneficial fruits from around the world. Together, their synergistic effect reaches far beyond what any single fruit could accomplish. MonaVie believes in the philosophy of Balance–Variety–Moderation: balance is better than relying upon the contribution of a single ingredient; variety can produce greater benefits than one particular nutrient; and moderation is more powerful than excess.
  • The Process: MonaVie takes great care at each step in of production to ensure the highest quality standards are met: (Harvesting) The process begins with the harvesting of the açai berry deep within the Amazon River basin. Unlike poachers, who illegally chop down an entire tree just to harvest a 12-inch section of the tree known as the palmito (or “heart of the palm”), our conservative harvesting method removes only the açai berries, thereby preserving the life of the tree and promoting the preservation of the Amazon Rainforest. (Processing) Açai is a powerful yet delicate fruit, and much of its vitamin and nutrient content can be lost within 24 hours after harvesting, if not properly cared for. To preserve its full complement of nutrients, our açai is frozen soon after harvesting. This frozen açai is then processed into our unique freeze-dried formula, the most effective and nutrient-dense form of açai available. (Formulation and bottling) Most companies use a process known as kettle pasteurization. This process involves heating the formula for several hours and can inadvertently “cook out” many of the nutritional properties. However, MonaVie uses flash pasteurization in which the formula is rapidly heated, bottled, and cooled, thereby capturing the fresh flavors, vibrant colors, and beneficial properties of the blend.
  • The science: Each step of this advanced and unique process takes place under the watchful eyes of our industry leading product development team and scientific advisers.

Who should use this Product?

• MonaVie Active—Men and women who want to maintain an active lifestyle and supplement their daily diets with beneficial antioxidants and a variety of nutritious, pigmented fruits.

• MonaVie Active Gel—Men and women on-the-go, who want all the benefits of MonaVie Original juice in a convenient gel pack.

How Do You Sell MonaVie?

You don't sell MonaVie by distributing it to your local grocery store or liquor store. You sell MonaVie through utilizing your own personal networks of people. This can include friends, family, co-workers, etc.

Many people within MonaVie throw MonaVie tasting parties where they invite people over to try the product and see if they would like to sign up. People have been known to make Mona-tinis (a MonaVie Martini) or MonaVie Margaritas as well.

However, you can also utilize opportunities to distribute MonaVie to service oriented businesses. By service oriented this means the business provides a service as their primary avenue of business. Examples of service oriented businesses that you could either sell to or have them sign up to become a distributor would be:

Doctor's Offices
Chiropractic Offices
Gyms
Hair Salons
Nail Salons
Real Estate Offices

There are also a number of websites which sell training tools to help you learn how to sell MonaVie. Some of the ones that I am familiar with are:

Plant Sterols Which Are In MonaVie Pulse Ranked by ABC News As One Of The Top Five SuperFoods To Lower Your Cholesterol

This article features Good Morning America's medical editor, Dr. Marie Savard, who explains the five super foods you can eat to dramatically lower your cholesterol -- by as much as 30 percent.

One of the five things she discusses is eating more plant stanols (saturated plant sterol derivatives). She says, "This may be something you haven't heard a lot about, but you need to incorporate plant stanols into your diet. It is proven to lower your bad cholesterol. Plant stanols alone can lower your LDL cholesterol by as much as 15 percent".

The FDA has approved the claim (click here to read it straight from Wikipedia) that, "Foods containing at least 0.4 grams per serving of plant sterols, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 grams and as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease".

Two servings (4 ounces) of MonaVie Pulse contain 0.8 grams of plant sterols!

Questions To Ask Competitors Of MonaVie

If you are considering drinking/distributing MonaVie but you are interested to know how MonaVie compares with other companies who offer drinks containing the acai berry, I suggest you ask these companies about their product before you give them your money and support their business.

Below are questions that you can copy and paste into an e-mail to ask the competitors of MonaVie.

Below this list of questions is an explanation of why each of these questions is an important question to ask.

Q1. Is the acai berry used in your drink freeze dried?

Q2. Is it flash pasteurized?

Q3. Within how many hours of harvesting the berry do you freeze dry and flash pasteurize?

Q4. Is the acai berry the first ingredient in your product?

Q5. What is the second ingredient?

Q6. What is the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) of the acai berry in your product?

Q7. Are there a variety of fruits in your product? If so, what are they in order of most to least in your product?

Q8. What is the cost of your product per serving?

Q9. How many grams of sugar is in your product on a per serving basis?

Q10. How many servings come in a bottle?

Q11. What is the cost of your product per serving?

Q12. What is the shelf life of your product?

Q13. Do your harvesting practices adhere to any Fair Trade organization's standards? If so, which ones?

Q14. Do you give anything back to the local community in which you harvest?

Q15. Do you harvest from existing acai palms or do you farm your own? Are you tearing down portions of the rain forest in order to grow more acai or are you using what is there?

Q16. Is your product free of GMO's (genetically modified organisms)?

Q17. Is your product organic?

Below is the reasoning behind why these questions are so critical:

Q1. Is the acai berry used in your drink freeze dried?
If the acai berry is not freeze dried it loses most of it's nutrient value within 48 hours.

Q2. Is it flash pasteurized?
Flash pastuerizing is the process of heating the liquid for approximately 15–30 seconds and then immediately cooling. By only briefly subjecting the acai to high temperatures, most -- but not all -- taste and color changes are avoided. Flash pasteurization is preferred to other methods because it kills most but not all microbes and destroys only some of the beneficial phytonutrients found in acai.

Q3. Within how many hours of harvesting the berry do you freeze dry and flash pastuerize?
The acai berry must be processed within 48 hours of harvesting or it's nutritional content will greatly diminish.

Q4. Is the acai berry the first ingredient in your product?
The FDA requires that companies list their ingredients from most to least so that the consumer knows how much of what ingredient they are consuming. Therefore if acai is listed as the first ingredient there is more acai in the drink than any other ingredient. Likewise, if the second ingredient is water or sugar, then these ingredients are a prominent part of what you are ingesting.

Q5. What is the second ingredient?
I have typically found that most company's second ingredient is either water or apple juice from concentrate.

Q6. What is the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) of your product?
The ORAC score is a method of measuring antioxidant capacities of different foods. If an acai company doesn't mention the ORAC levels of their acai, it is probably because their levels are very low. High quality acai products have high ORAC levels.

Q7. Are there a variety of fruits in your product? If so, what are they in order of most to least in your product?
This is important because there are many fruits that are considered potent antioxidants and all of them are unique and they all possess a different chemical make-up. Each fruit may be better in one very specific area so it is important to have a variety of antioxidants in your diet. There are a number of different antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables.

Q8. What is the cost of your product per serving?
Although MonaVie appears to be expensive as it retails for around $40/bottle, it has 25 1oz. servings in a bottle, where as most acai drinks on the market have serving sizes of 8oz. and therefore way less servings per bottle. Once you break it down on a cost/serving basis you will find out the true cost of what you are buying. Not to mention, you get a wholesale discount on MonaVie as well as a bulk order discount - you don't get these discounts with other products.

Q9. How many grams of sugar are there per serving?
This is very important because if a serving size is 8 oz. you are going to be consuming a lot more sugar than a 1 ounce shot of MonaVie and if you are a diabetic this is unacceptable. Sambazon smoothies have between 21 - 30 grams of sugar per serving! MonaVie has between 3 - 7 grams of sugar/serving. Click here to read more about the differences between Sambazon and MonaVie.

Q10. Can you drink this product if you have diabetes?
Because there are only 3g of sugar per serving in MonaVie Active and Original and 7g per serving in MonaVie Pulse, they are considered safe for diabetics (although always check with your doctor first).

Q9. How many grams of sugar is in your product on a per serving basis?
MonaVie Original and Active have 3g and MonaVie Pulse has 7g.

Q10. How many servings come in a bottle?
MonaVie Original and Active have 25 servings/bottle and MonaVie Pulse has 12 servings/bottle.

Q11. What is the cost of your product per serving?
Click here to read the MonaVie vs. Sambazon post where the cost/serving of MonaVie is broken down.

Q12. What is the shelf life of your product?
MonaVie shelf life is one year unopened and 30 - 60 days after opening.

Q13. Do your harvesting practices adhere to any Fair Trade organization's standards? If so, which ones?
MonaVie has implemented the practices and policies for ethical conduct required by the US Direct Selling Association (http://dsa.org/ethics/) and the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (http://wfdsa.org/world_codes/index.cfm?fa=modelCodeLanguage). These ethical codes and MonaVie's policies and practices are consistent with fair trade laws and regulations in all jurisdictions in which it operates. (This information is quoted directly from an e-mail response sent to me through MonaVie distributor support).

Q14. Do you give anything back to the local community in which you harvest?
MonaVie has The MORE Project. Click here to read more about it.

Q15. Do you harvest from existing acai palms or do you farm your own? Are you tearing down portions of the rain forest in order to grow more acai or are you using what is there?
MonaVie is wild harvested.

Q16. Is your product free of GMO's (genetically modified organisms)?
MonaVie is GMO Free.

Q17. Is your product organic?
The acai used in MonaVie is wild crafted and comes directly from the forest, therefore organic certification would be unnecessary. MonaVie is not certified organic. However, to ensure safety the finished MonaVie products are regularly tested for dozens of pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides by an independent, third-party analytical laboratory. Each test performed has repeatedly found the products to be free of any of these potentially harmful substances. This added step in MonaVie’s quality control process ensures our consumers are getting a safe, pure, and high-quality product. (This is quoted directly from an e-mail response from MonaVie distributor support).

What is the difference between MonaVie and Sambazon? This question was a big one for me when my friends became distributors for MonaVie and wanted me to become one too. I have literally spent two weeks day and night... way too many hours... researching the product and it's competitors and trying to really figure out what MonaVie is all about. I intend to write more blogs about MonaVie but for now this blog is about the number one question I had that no one could really answer for me, not even the internet! So after trying to find the answer the easy way with no luck, I decided I would have to dig in a lot deeper and figure out the answer myself.

There are many other products on the market containing the acai berry besides Sambazon and MonaVie but so many of them do not follow as stringent practices for harvesting and processing the berry as MonaVie and Sambazon do, so in my opinion they are not comparable. It is important that the acai berry be processed within 48 hours of being harvested as the nutritional integrity of the fruit begins to diminish. It is also important the acai berry is freeze dried, a process that can be a lot more expensive than other methods of preservation, but the only proven effective method for maintaining a high ORAC score.

When I looked at the information I could easily access on Sambazon and MonaVie from their actual websites they both seemed to be very similar. They both freeze dry their acai berries within 48 hours of harvesting them, they both flash pasteurize the berries, they both have the acai berry as the first and therefore main ingredient (ingredients are required by FDA to be listed in order of most to least), they both support local programs that give back to the community in which they harvest, Brazil. MonaVie is the number one harvester in Brazil and Sambazon is number two.

However, the main difference that kept my attention towards Sambazon was the price. Sambazon is $2.99/bottle and MonaVie retails for $39.00/bottle for Original, $45.00/bottle for Active and $45.25/bottle for Pulse! However, once I broke the cost down per serving, Sambazon worked out to be $2.30/serving, MonaVie Original retails for $1.56/serving, MonaVie Active retails for $1.80/serving and MonaVie Pulse retails for $3.77/serving. So two out of the three MonaVie drinks were cheaper than Sambazon! Not to mention, this was based on the retail pricing for MonaVie, not the wholesale or bulk pricing. Which brings me to my next point…

No matter how much Sambazon I drink and no matter how many people I tell about Sambazon, I will never get paid to drink it. MonaVie works differently from a typical retail company because it does not sell at retail locations. You have to buy it through an independent distributor or become an independent distributor yourself (which is free for 2009, but usually is a one time fee of $39.00). If you chose to become an independent distributor, you can then buy the product at wholesale and bulk pricing, as well as sell it to others. You don’t have to do anything more than buy the juice if you don’t want to and you don’t even have to commit to buying the juice! Although most people find it easier to just have it automatically sent to them every 28 days. This makes it different than a pyramid scheme because with a pyramid scheme you get paid bonuses based on recruitment of other people to sell it, not just on selling the product itself. There are a total of 8 ways you can get paid as a distributor of MonaVie. There are a total of zero ways to get paid drinking Sambazon.

The other factor that I liked about MonaVie is the fact that you can have it automatically delivered to your doorstep every month. In this sense it helps you to make a stronger commitment to better health. How many times have you tried to eat or drink something in order to be healthier, but then you forget to buy it when you’re at the grocery store and before you know it you’re back to your old ways? If you truly want to make a commitment to better health and to turn it into a habit, what better way is there than to have it show up at your door step?

MonaVie is 100% juice, there is no water and the juice in MonaVie Active and Pulse is not from concentrate. Only 1 of Sambazon's drinks is 100% juice and they all contain water and juice from concentrate.

Both MonaVie and Sambazon have a variety of fruits in their juices in addition to the acai berry, however there is a far more diverse ingredient list in MonaVie (18 other fruits from all around the world), including wolfberry, lychee, acerola, camu camu and cupuacu. Can you say that three times? Sambazon contains acerola as well but the other ingredients are all things we can easily get in our grocery store here like bananas and blueberries and apple juice. However, they do have a supergreens drink that contains wheatgrass, chlorella and spirulina, some of my favorite Superfoods. See below for all nutrition facts and ingredients for both products.

Finally, I did a taste test! I bought all three Sambazon drinks and did a side by side taste test comparison with MonaVie Active, which was the bottle my friend had given me to try (although I hear Pulse tastes the best). I invited a number of my friends to try the two brands side by side and MonaVie won across the board! The main reasons were that drinking MonaVie tasted like you had just juiced the fruits yourself; Sambazon tasted more like an overly sweet shake you would get at a smoothie shop. It was good, but very sweet.

The sugar per serving for Sambazon is: 20g for Supergreens Revolution, 21g for Antioxidant Trinity and 30g for Strawberry Samba. The sugar per serving for MonaVie is: 3g for MonaVie Original, 3g for MonaVie Active and 7g for MonaVie Pulse.

The calories per serving for Sambazon are: 140 for Supergreens Revolution, 110 for Antioxidant Trinity and 160 for Strawberry Samba. The calories per serving for MonaVie is: 30 for MonaVie Original, 30 for MonaVie Active and 45 for MonaVie Pulse.

The fat per serving for Sambazon is: 3.5g for Supergreens Revolution, 2g for Antioxidant Trinity and 3g for Strawberry Samba. The fat per serving for MonaVie is: .5g for MonaVie Original, .5g for MonaVie Active and 1g for MonaVie Pulse.

Below is a list of questions I had and answers I gathered comparing Sambazon and MonaVie. The information obtained in the answers to these questions did not come from random MonaVie distributors or other bad internet sources; they came directly from either Sambazon or MonaVie’s websites or directly from e-mail communication with the actual company itself, in the case of MonaVie. MonaVie responded to all of my questions with a 24 – 48 hour turnaround time. It has been two weeks since I e-mailed Sambazon and I have yet to hear back from them so all I can go on is what their website states.

Beyond the question and answer section are the serving sizes, nutritional facts and ingredients in both Sambazon and MonaVie. Beyond that, is a breakdown of the cost of MonaVie and Sambazon per serving and recommended daily intake for retail pricing, wholesale pricing and bulk pricing (up to two cases, although you can order up to 12 cases at a time for an optimum amount).

Q: How does your product compare to Sambazon in terms of nutrients, ORAC values and ingredients including sugar content?

A: MonaVie Product Support: We empathize with the desire to do direct product comparisons with MonaVie; however, MonaVie does not want to get into the business of comparing or criticizing products. Doing direct product comparisons also comes with significant legal liability. It is best altogether to not do them. All of MonaVie’s energies and time are concentrated on formulating the best product possible. Açai is a super food; in fact, we believe it to be the world’s number one super food.

Due to current company policy I cannot provide a side by side comparison; however, I can provide you with some information to describe the benefits of MonaVie’s fruit blend and the reasons that make MonaVie the amazing product it is.

Coming from a mixture of 19 fruits, the MonaVie blend provides a wide spectrum of antioxidants and phytonutrients that will assist you in maintaining good health by inhibiting harmful free radicals.

The açai berry plays a significant role in this process as being the fruit with the highest recorded ORAC score per gram amongst all other fruits and vegetables tested to date. There is no question as to why so much focus has been on the açai berry in the MonaVie blends. Because of this unique fruit and the amazing nutritional properties that it holds, research has shown that by freeze-drying the berry, most if not all of the potent phytochemicals can be retained as opposed to other forms of drying processes. MonaVie uses this freeze-dried açai as its star ingredient in the MonaVie blends.

By looking an ingredient list of a product, you can see what ingredient the most abundant is as is the case with MonaVie. If you read the nutritional facts panel you will see: “proprietary blend of açai freeze dried powder and puree” as the first ingredient. MonaVie uses a freeze dried Açai that is patent-pending protected in the U.S and 10 international countries.

Degradation or loss of nutritional value is the main reason that the Açai berry must be picked and processed within the first 48 hours. MonaVie processes the Açai fruit into a pulp containing 14 percent solids (pulp). This pulp is immediately frozen, put into a drum, and shipped for later use. The pulp/puree is kept frozen until it is ready to be blended into the finished MonaVie product. To process the freeze dried powder used in MonaVie, frozen açai pulp is used and placed on trays which enter a freeze drying chamber. This freeze-drying has many benefits.

Sambazon did not respond to this question when I e-mailed them. Their website says the following:
Q: How do Sambazon Products compare to other Acai products on the market?A: Because Acai is very new to the US, no standards have been put in place to regulate how much Acai fruit must be in a product in order for it to claim it is Acai. We are working with the USDA to establish guidelines to keep companies from creating products that make Acai claims without delivering Acai nutrition. Acai is also very perishable so when you see products that have an off flavor or smell they may be using spoiled acai.

Q: Does Sambazon use the whole acai berry?

A: Sambazon.com: Acai berries are 98 percent seed and lose most of their nutritional value after 24 hours after being harvested. Because of this, we harvest the berries and immediately have the pulp scraped off the seeds into a puree. The puree is then flash pasteurized (required by law) and quick frozen into the smoothie packs or bulk drums to be used for the RTD Smoothies.
MonaVie Product Support: We use the skin and pulp of the acai berry. The seed is not used.

Q: What is the difference between MonaVie’s OptiACAI patent pending freeze drying process and Sambazon’s?

A: MonaVie Product Support: Degradation or loss of nutritional value is the main reason that the Açai berry must be picked and processed within the first 48 hours.

MonaVie uses freeze-dried açai and is the first to use freeze-dried açai in a juice. Other companies may use their own freeze-dried açai.

The freeze-dried açai used by MonaVie is patent pending. An application for a patent has been filed in the U.S and 10 international countries. While MonaVie is not the patent owner, the company has been given full access and rights to the patent’s intellectual properties.

OptiAÇAI is a trademark name for this patent-pending freeze-dried açai. No other company has the right to use the trademark name OptiAÇAI. The patent is for specific claims associated with the nutritional content of freeze-dried açai; it is not a process patent on the freeze-drying. MonaVie is therefore waiting to hear from the patent office regarding this patent.
Direct from Wikipedia.org: “Most of the research to date on açaí has focused on a particular freeze-dried form referred to as Opti-açaí.[6][7] This powder preparation of freeze-dried açaí fruit pulp and skin was reported to contain (per 100 g of extract) 533.9 calories, 52.2 g carbohydrates, 8.1 g protein, and 32.5 g total fat. The carbohydrate portion included 44.2 g of fiber.[6] The powder was also shown to contain (per 100 g): negligible vitamin C, 260 mg calcium, 4.4 mg iron, and 1002 U vitamin A, as well as aspartic acid and glutamic acid; the amino acid content was 7.59% of total dry weight.
The fat content of açaí consists of oleic acid (56.2% of total fats), palmitic acid (24.1%), and linoleic acid (12.5%).[6] Açaí also contains beta-sitosterol (78–91% of total sterols).[6][8] The oil compartments in açaí fruit contain polyphenols such as procyanidin oligmers and vanillic acid, syringic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, and ferulic acid, which were shown to degrade substantially during storage or exposure to heat.[9]

Q: Can you clearly explain the process you use to harvest and process the acai berry and explain how it differs from any other company’s process?

A: MonaVie Product Support: has become the foremost expert on harvesting the açai berry. MonaVie travels to Brazil frequently during the açai harvest season to help identify the best sources of açai berries and to ensure they are processed using the highest quality standards. It has been determined that the açai berry must be processed within 24-48 hours after it has been harvested to maintain the berry’s superior nutritional profile. Once the berry is processed, it is frozen to preserve its nutrient content. This makes certain that the açai berry added to the MonaVie products will deliver the greatest benefit once consumed.

The açai that MonaVie uses is not from a farm or plantation. It is from wild açai trees within the Amazon Rainforest. We do not buy from any type of farm. We choose to buy from the local Amazonians who literally climb the açai tree to the top and pick the berries.

Many of the locals that we buy from have used in the past the açai palm tree specifically for the hearts of palm. The hearts of palm is a section of the trunk popularly used in salads. When the hearts of palm is removed from the açai palm, the açai tree will inevitably die. We have chosen to use many of the same hearts of palm harvesters to now help harvest the açai berry. This helps decrease the production of hearts of palm and destruction of the rainforest.

We pay the harvesters substantially more to harvest the açai berry than they would otherwise to harvest the hearts of palm. Also, the education we have given to the harvesters of the hearts of palm has shown very beneficial results. Many of these harvesters have begun planting more açai trees when one has died. In this way we have contributed to the preservation of the rainforest and helped the economy in these regions.

In addition to this, when an açai tree dies naturally (they will live about 100 years), about five seedlings are replanted. The açai berry can be harvested within a few short years. In 2007 alone, we have already helped to preserve over 1,000 acres of the Amazon Rainforest.

Total consumption of the Açai fruit including what is consumed in Brazil is approximately 160,000 tons per year representing approximately 20 percent of the Açai that is actually available for harvesting. MonaVie is the largest consumer of açai in Brazil. The amount of açai in the rainforest is overwhelming, but we still feel it necessary to continue to preserve this abundant supply.

Q: Do you do anything to protect the rainforest/Do you have any cause you support?

A: Sambazon: Sustainable Amazon Partnership: (see website for more details) http://www.sambazon.com/mission.html
MonaVie: The MORE Project (click here to read about The MORE Project)

Q: How many acai berries are in a bottle?

A: Sambazon: See nutritional information below for information on how many berries there are per bottle.
MonaVie Product Support: MonaVie has chosen not to disclose the amount of ingredients in its formula. The product’s formula is a trade secret and is one of the company’s greatest intellectual assets protected under U.S. law. By sharing this information, it is easier for unscrupulous companies to knock-off or copy our formula. We are protecting our distributor’s ability to sell a truly unique and proprietary product.

We can tell you, however, that the ingredients appear on the label in order by amount from most to least. This means that because açai is the first ingredient listed on the label, there is more açai in the MonaVie products than any other single ingredient.

The 18 additional fruits have been added to MonaVie’s premier açai blend for the purpose of adding to the product’s nutritional spectrum to provide you with a variety of antioxidants.

Q: What is the ORAC score for your product?

A: Sambazon.com: One of our Acai smoothies or juices (10.4 fl oz.) have anywhere from 5,000- 15,000 ORAC units.
Monavie.com: Four ounces of MonaVie has an approximate ORAC value of 4,000 to 5,000 units. This is the approximate ORAC value of 5 to 13 commonly eaten fruits and vegetables. Health experts currently recommend consuming 5,000 ORAC units per day for optimal antioxidant protection.
***SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON*** If you break down the ORAC unit scores per oz. Sambazon smoothies or juices have between 481 to 1442 units per ounce and MonaVie has between 1000 to 1250 units per ounce.

Q: Why is Mona Vie so expensive compared to Sambazon? (I asked this question to MonaVie prior to realizing that 2 out of the 3 MonaVie drinks are actually cheaper per serving than the Sambazon drinks – see above)

A: MonaVie develops and markets scientifically formulated, premium quality nutritional products. The variety of the fruits in MonaVie have been chosen for their distinct nutritional assets. Açai, our star ingredient, is one of the world's most powerful antioxidants but is hard to come by outside the Amazon. In addition to acai, there are 18 additional body-beneficial fruits. Many of these exotic fruits cannot simply be picked up at your local supermarket.

Q: Why is MonaVie not organic?

A: MonaVie Product Support: The acai used in MonaVie is wild crafted and comes directly from the forest, therefore organic certification would be unnecessary.

Q: Is MonaVie FDA approved?

A: There is no official approval process or certificate issued by the FDA to approve the sale of any food or juice product. The Food and Drug Administration has established stringent regulations, called Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to ensure the safety and manufacturing of foods sold in the United States.

MonaVie is manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility. The ingredients contained in MonaVie products are generally recognized as safe (GRAS), and obtaining prior approval from the FDA is not required.

Q: Why is the ratio of ingredients in your product not public information?

A: The amount of each ingredient in the MonaVie product is proprietary. The product formula is one of the company’s greatest intellectual properties. However I will remind you that the ingredients appear on the label in order by amount as required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). MonaVie’s ingredient list contains Açai puree, Açai freeze dried powder, eighteen other fruits, glucosamine hydrochloride, Esterified fatty acids, etc, etc. Freeze dried Açai powder and açai puree are the most abundant ingredients in MonaVie products.

Q: Why is there not a Nutrition Facts label printed on your bottle with fat, calorie, etc content amounts?

A: The information printed on the MonaVie bottles is compliant with FDA labeling laws. If additional information is requested, it can be provided by emailing product questions.

Q: How much sugar is in each serving?

A: MonaVie Product Support: MonaVie does not add any additional sugars to the blend. The total amount of sugar is very small in a one ounce serving. The sugar per serving for MonaVie is: 3g for MonaVie Original, 3g for MonaVie Active and 7g for MonaVie Pulse.
Sambazon Nutrtion Facts: The sugar per serving for Sambazon is: 20g for Supergreens Revolution, 21g for Antioxidant Trinity and 30g for Strawberry Samba.

Q: Is Sambazon/MonaVie fair trade?

A: Sambazon Bottle: “our certified organic and fair trade forest projects help protect the Amazon Rainforest and benefit thousands of local families”
MonaVie Product Support: The MORE Project is dedicated to changing lives and restoring families living in extreme poverty in Brazil. To the lives it touches, the MORE project means more hope, more health, more caring, and more love. http://www.themoreproject.org/ MonaVie seeks to conduct its business ethically and responsibly and expects its independent distributors to do the same.

Q: What is the shelf life of MonaVie/Sambazon?

A: MonaVie is good for one year and then approximately 30 – 60 days once the bottle has been opened as long as the bottle has been refrigerated.
Sambazon does not state what the shelf life is for their juices or smoothies, however I purchased my juices on 6.6.09 from Whole Foods and they expire on July 25th, 2009.
